  • Best Whiskeys under $100

Review August 16, 2021 By Ryan Baldwin

You don’t need deep pockets to have baller taste. There are some killer drams out there if you know where/what to look for. Need a hand? Right this way... Whether it’s bourbon, single malt, blended malt, blended whiskey or a barrel proof banger; we have a bottle for you to try. Pricing is all in Australian dollars (AUD).

Buffalo Trace - $60

Buffalo Trace has been making legendary bourbon whiskey for over 220 years through prohibition and two world wars. The Buffalo Trace distillery has been awarded 'Distillery of the Year' 7 times and the self named Buffalo Trace expression itself, has been awarded over 22 national and international awards. The whiskey exudes wonderful aromas of vanilla, mint and molasses which follows through on the palate with notes of brown sugar and spice. A long and dry finish rounds off what is a truly great whiskey.

Wild Turkey 101 - $70

Wild Turkey 101 is a genuine full-bodied super-premium Bourbon. It’s banger that punches well above its weight. Its high Rye content gives it that Wild Turkey signature kick. Wild Turkey 101 has an exceptionally gentle and rich aroma for a high proof bourbon, thanks to its uncompromising approach to the quality distillation processes.

Coal Ila 12 - $95

Fresh, sweetly fruity, smooth-bodied peat, Caol Ila 12 YO Single Malt Scotch Whisky delicately balances a range of tastes and is great introduction to the traditional peated whiskies of Islay. The clean, appetising nose shows subtle citrus fruit with just a puff of smoke. Firm and smooth, it begins with a smooth gusto then yields a sweet fragrant smokiness wrapped in a lingering finish.

Highland Park 12 - $90

The Highland style of Whisky is generally considered to be one of the most approachable styles. Deep gold in colour with a nose of heather and wood smoke. Highland Park has a deceptively complex palate that ranges from sweet maltiness to smokey peat and savoury spices.

Ardbeg 10 - $100

Ardbeg 10-Year-Old Single Malt is a typical Islay (eye-la). Light gold colour with exceptional balance and depth on the nose. The aroma is a beguiling mix of toffee and chocolate sweetness, cinnamon spice, fresh citrus and floral notes of white wine are evident, as are melon, pear drops and a gentle creaminess. There is also a healthy serving of seaspray and smoked fish. Hickory and coffee emerge on the finish. This one is such a beauty but you’re most likely to hate it at first.

Monkey Shoulder - $60

Monkey Shoulder a bit of a chameleon in the premium blended sixth whisky segment. Steeped in history and is the only one we know about that to this day is still tended by hand by the experienced Malt Men of Speyside. A smooth and rich 'triple' malt Scotch (a world first!) that has been blended from three of Speyside's finest single malts. A delightful nose of sherry, cinnamon baked pear, butterscotch, barley, strawberry and Bourbon vanilla which are all complemented by tangy, sweet nut, citrus, mint, oak and orange peel flavours.

GlenFarclas 8 - $88

Meaning 'Glen of the green grassland', Glenfarclas has an enviable reputation amongst Whisky lovers around the world. It’s really the old trusty of the industry and for good reason. One of the few awesome distilleries that are family owned in Scotland that have consistently made solid products and have never been influenced by shareholders. Because there are none. The 8 Year Old is vibrant and straw gold in colour, with fresh, sappy aromas of honey, almonds and butterscotch. It’s all about energy and well made new make. A firm palate is married with a mild smokiness and a delicious malty, butterscotch finish.

The Gospel Rye - $90

The Gospel Straight Rye Whiskey is the Australian answer to a bold and rich American style whiskey, made using 100% Australian single-sourced rye grain and Melbourne’s dynamic climate to produce a unique rye whiskey unlike any other. I mean it’s liquid silk. Made by our favorite South Carolina import, Ben Bowles. His understanding of Rye is something to behold and unlike most distiller’s, he’s also a professional engineer; the rare golden mix of art and science. The Gospel Straight Rye Whiskey is full of flavour and spice, a deep and complex whiskey that reveals more of itself as you sip. When you need your whiskey to be bold on its own or stand out in the cocktail mix, grab the Straight Full-flavoured rye with medium body and a symphony of intensity. This dram perfectly balances the rye spice and vanilla oak as well Jazzy Jeff did with the Fresh Prince. You get our drift. This is one fly Rye.
